Richard Oppenheim

Biography

Richard Oppenheim, jazz saxophonist, studied classical saxophone with Eugene Rousseau and jazz improvisation with David Baker at Indiana University prior to moving to New York City, where he was a professional musician from 1976-2006.    He has performed with Marvin Gaye, Lionel Hampton, Illinois Jacquet, Jaki Byard, Charles Mingus, Buddy Rich, Foghat, Bernard “Pretty” Purdie and Otis Rush, and has been a mainstay on the jazz scene in San Antonio since 2006, during which time he has maintained a private teaching practice, in addition to directing KRTU’s Growing Jazz initiative for two years.

Oppenheim worked as a solfeggist with ASCAP’s department of Radio, Internet and Other Surveys from 1990-2006, supervising the jazz and foreign language performance surveys. He received an Artists Foundation of San Antonio’s grant for composition in 2012, and has served as President of the Musicians’ Society of San Antonio since 2011.
